Join Me at CIA Copia for Uncorked and BBQ Bliss
It’s not every day that you get the chance to combine your passions for film, wine, and storytelling in one unforgettable evening. That’s why I’m honored to moderate the upcoming panel discussion following the screening of the Netflix film Uncorked (2020) as part of CIA at Copia’s Flavors of Film Series on Saturday, February 22, 2025. Purchase your tickets here to be part of this unforgettable evening of film.
If you haven’t seen Uncorked, let me tell you—it’s a heartfelt, beautifully crafted story about family, identity and chasing dreams. Elijah, the film’s main character and played by Mamoudou Athie, dreams of becoming a master sommelier, a path not often portrayed in mainstream cinema. At the same time, he struggles with his father’s expectations to take over the family’s Memphis BBQ joint. The film masterfully weaves themes of tradition, ambition and the sacrifices we make to pursue our passions.
As someone who has built a career blending the worlds of luxury, wine and storytelling, I couldn’t feel more connected to this film. It celebrates the power of dreams while shining a light on the complexities of family dynamics. The rich culinary elements and the inclusion of wine culture make it even more special for me. In 2020, the film moved me to spotlight several Black wine professionals in Napa Valley and Sonoma and use the film as the centerpiece. (Read my Black Wines Matter column.)
After the screening, I’ll be moderating an engaging Q&A session with an incredible lineup of guests:
Mamoudou Athie, who brings depth and charm to his portrayal of Elijah
Courtney B. Vance, whose portrayal of Louis (Elijah’s father) grounds the film in emotional authenticity
Prentice Penny, the filmmaker and director whose vision brought Uncorked to life
Carlton McCoy, CIA alum, master sommelier, and a trailblazer in the wine industry
Each of these individuals has contributed to the film and its themes in ways that resonate far beyond the screen. I’m thrilled to help unpack their insights, creative processes and the inspiration behind this moving story.
The evening will conclude with a culinary treat: a BBQ Chef’s dinner prepared by Chef Darryl Bell of Stateline Road Smoke House. Not only is Chef Bell a master of barbecue, but his restaurant also holds a special distinction: Stateline Road Smoke House is the first Black-owned restaurant to open in Napa since the 1800s. I’m such a fan of Darryl! As a proud member of the Association of African American Vintners (AAAV), I’m especially excited about the curated wine pairings from AAAV, which showcase the talent and diversity of Black-owned wine brands.
For me, this event represents more than just an opportunity to discuss a film—it’s a celebration of passion, perseverance and the cultural richness that comes when food, wine and storytelling intersect. It’s a privilege to share this space with such talented individuals and an audience that appreciates the art of both film and food.
Purchase your tickets here to be part of this unforgettable evening of film. Together, we’ll explore the themes of Uncorked, share stories, and raise a glass to the artistry that connects us all.
