Sadly, a dog died on a United Airlines flight this week after a flight attendant ordered a passenger to put her pet carrier containing the French bulldog in an overhead bin on a flight from Houston to New York.
If a flight attendant tried to put my bag that contained my dog in an overhead bin on an airplane, there is no way in hell that I would allow it to happen. If it’s true that it is illegal to disobey a flight attendant, then I would be arrested. #I’mjustsayin
No way should United Airlines, which has deservedly endured a slew of bad publicity in recent months due to its own actions, be let off the hook.
However, blame goes both ways. Folks, we must take responsibility for our actions, or lack thereof. Common sense tells you that a dog, especially a breed like a French bulldog, a brachycephalic that already has trouble breathing, doesn’t belong in confined quarters with no air. No dog, or baby for that matter, should travel in an overhead bin. My heart breaks when I think of the torture this dog, Kokito, endured and the pain the family experienced when the mother and daughter realized their family puppy had passed.
When I first heard of this tragedy, I was completely flabbergasted. And then to read that passengers heard the dog barking. What kind of people were on this flight listening to a dog bark in the overhead bin until the dog died? Obviously no one did anything that changed anything because if they did, the dog would still be alive and I wouldn’t be writing this blog post. #ifyouseesomethingsaysomething
“This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin,” United Airlines said in a statement. “We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them. We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again.”
This Facebook post made me sick.
