The Haute Living San Francisco November December 2015 issue was our first philanthropy issue—a long overdue theme considering how many giving people there are in the San Francisco Bay Area. We were so honored to feature Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob on the cover, my first cover story for the magazine.
In addition to Lacob, the Charitable Champion, I also sat down to interview Dede Wilsey, the philanthropic force of nature, in her beautiful home in Pacific Heights, and Pam Baer in the office of her new company, For Goodness Sake, which allows people to shop with a purpose online and at her pop-up boutique.
Beloved chef Nancy Oakes and Justin Tuck of the Oakland Raiders are also in the issue.
The real coup was landing Lacob, whom I interviewed in Las Vegas in July, not long after the Warriors had won their first NBA championship in 40 years. It was my previous life as the Los Angeles Lakers’ beat writer that helped me score the interview and photo shoot with Joe. The Warriors VP of PR is Raymond Ridder, who was an assistant when I covered the team. He trusted me that I wouldn’t exploit his boss, and I didn’t.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so entertained during an interview as I was with Dede. She was a hoot to talk to, or I should say, listen to talk. It just so happened that on the day of the interview and photo shoot, the Blue Angels were performing during Fleet Week. We took a break to stand on her balcony and watch for a while. Whoever thought I’d be watching the Blue Angels with a socialite such as Dede. BTW, I couldn’t help but notice the humongous diamonds in her housekeeper’s ears. Wow! Naturally, I had a good time playing with Dede’s dogs during the interview. I used to volunteer at the SF SPCA, formerly Pets Unlimited, and Dede is one of their big donors. Pets and sports, my two passions! Well, two of them. There’s also food and wine.
