Jim Brown, the NFL legend, graced the cover of Haute Living San Francisco‘s January February 2016 issue, which was all about Super Bowl 50. With the golden anniversary of the most-watched annual sporting event being played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, dedicating the issue to the NFL’s championship game was a no-brainer.
For the cover story, I traveled down to Los Angeles to interview and photograph Brown. His lovely wife Monique Brown and their two children also were photographed. What a treat it was to talk to Jim Brown! A man whose Hollywood Hills home I, and plenty of other USC Trojans, used to hang out at back in the 1980s. Jim got such a kick out of knowing that. He also seemed delighted that I knew about Maverick’s Flat. Who knew he used to be a part owner in that joint on Crenshaw Blvd. All of these things, as well as my great questions I’m sure, helped him feel at ease with me, which translated to a meaningful interview and story.
Two months after the interview, Haute Living partnered with Louis XIII to throw Jim his 80th birthday dinner in San Francisco just a few days before the Super Bowl. What an elegant affair that was for the 100 guests lucky enough to be invited.
Another memorable interview was the one I did with socialite Charlotte Mailliard Shultz at her Nob Hill penthouse with stunning views. Charlotte is married to George Shultz, the former Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan. And I sat down with Thomas Keller, the culinary king, in his Yountville office. He was so easy to talk to, although I now know never to ask him “what’s next for you?” Daniel Lurie, who just might be San Francisco’s next mayor, and Keith Bruce, were two more fascinating men I had a chance to meet and interview. We photographed Daniel, the Chairman of the Super Bowl 50 Bay Area Host Commmittee, in the Super Bowl 50 office, where I also interviewed Keith, the CEO and President. It was a jam-packed issue that, as usual, kept me busy, busy, busy but was so rewarding to work on.
As if that wasn’t enough, I also traveled to Doha to interview another legend, Robert DeNiro, for the cover of Haute Living Los Angeles—a story that Executive Editor Laura Schreffler would write. We are a team at Haute Living! It marked my second trip to the Middle East in one year, which was odd considering I had never been before.
